Why Buy Portland Strawberries |
|
The expertise to create a great strawberry begins months before the sale. There is the soil preparation, the natural fertilizer and good food we feed the plants. Healthy happy plants grow yummy fat plump strawberries.
Years of experience of growing different varieties also helps to provide a good consistent quality and flavour of Strawberry throughout the year
Portland Strawberries are farm fresh and are only sold through our sales outlet on our Farm. This gives us control of our product, which Locals and Tourists have learned to trust and enjoy. Climate and the weather are not under our control but during trying weather we grade our strawberry accordingly and any quality issues information is passed on to the customer.
Portland Strawberries was one of the first farms in the south West of Victoria to gain Quality Assurance with SQF 2000 in 1999. These standards are followed by management and staff alike. We are a local business employing local people from our community and supplying a local service.
What to Look for when Buying Strawberries and how to Store Them |

|
|
Look for full colour, fat, bold dry unblemished strawberries are best. Put your strawberries in a cool spot in the car e.g. in the air-conditioned part of the car if you don’t have an esky or cooler bag in the boot. When you reach your destinations put them into the refrigerator and leave washing your strawberries until just before serving them as this damages strawberries causing quality of the berry to deteoriate quickly. A gentle spray of cool water is best to wash them and to maximise strawberry flavour bring strawberries to room temperature just before serving.
REMEMBER: Less handling means less bruising and store them in less than 5 degrees C.
